Professor of Choral Music

Dr. Michael Carter is excited to join the faculty at Yavapai College as Professor of Choral Music. He comes to Yavapai with a wealth of experience as a conductor, educator, and performer. He recently graduated with his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University, where he worked closely with several advanced ensembles and taught courses in conducting and vocal methods.

He also holds a Master of Music in Choral Conducting and a Bachelor of Music Education from Brigham Young University. At BYU, he taught undergraduate courses in conducting and sight-singing, directed the University Chorale, and served as assistant conductor to all four auditioned choirs, including the nationally recognized BYU Singers.

Before his graduate studies, Michael directed choirs at Woods Cross High School and American Preparatory Academy in Utah, where his leadership helped the programs grow in both size and quality.

In addition to his work in the classroom and on the podium, Michael is an active performer, having sung with professional chamber choirs such as Sound of Ages, Brevitas, and Audivi, and he has appeared as a bass soloist with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra.

Michael and his wife Amy are thrilled to join the Prescott community with their two children, Lucy (3) and Sam (1).
