About Face
The Patty McMullen-Mikles Art Gallery presents “The Meaning Crisis”. Artist J. Michael McDonald is a resident of Jerome for 27 years. McDonald turned to portraiture during COVID-19 shutdowns, trying to capture the effects of the unique circumstances on the human face.
He has 10 new pieces, with older works filling out the exhibit. “About Face,” he said, is mostly portraits of friends and neighbors and his interpretations of their expressions – “what we’re going through as a culture right now,” he said.
McDonald has always worked in a wide variety of media – “I’m not your traditional artist,” he said. His return to oil has helped him regain his confidence in fine art. It was not a vanity project; he said it was a way to express the emotions of the times. He calls his style magical realism.
Variations on Nature
The Patty McMullen-Mikles Art Gallery presents Vibrations of Nature, an art exhibit featuring the works of Margo Mitchell and Janet Weaver.
Mitchell and Weaver are established artists in the Verde Valley. Mitchell paints mostly animals and landscapes, defining her style as realism with a healthy dose of impressionism. Weaver works mostly in still-life, with a focus on color, extreme detail and high contrast.
Together these artists take you on a journey filled with the vibrant colors of life and a deep reverence for the beauty found in the natural world.

Hemleben Plein Air Studies
Hemleben is an award winning Plein Air painter from Jerome, AZ. His works are beloved and collected by art lovers around the globe including William Shatner as a collector. The Verde Art Gallery of Yavapai College is presenting a special exhibit of his Plein Air studies created before Hemleben finalizes the work.
The Girl and the Shedding Fox
The Girl and the Shedding Fox is a collaborative hybrid installation of visual artworks around a narrative. This project began in 2015 when Lisa Sanders sent Sandra Hunter a painting of a creature with furry ears and sad eyes. She painted it on Japanese paper, that looked like the creature was shedding. Thus, the tale of the Girl and the Shedding Fox was born! For the next year and a half the two artists exchanged prose and artwork as the narrative grew.
Rebuilding and Reimagining Reitz Ranch
For years the late Don Reitz quietly created masterpieces on his ranch in Clarkdale. To the outside world he was considered one of the fathers of modern ceramics. Few in central Arizona were aware of this magical activity and place. Over the years, many assistants came through the ranch from out of state to apprentice and fire his wood fire and salt kilns. Others were fortunate enough to be invited to work in teams to fire kilns and watch unveilings of the firings at the ranch. Kiln openings, which Don described as Christmas or Halloween, were highly anticipated.
Several years after Don passed, two lovely people and a pack of rescue dogs and horses came to the ranch with a vision of continuing the legacy of Don Reitz and building community. This show is about Sheryl and Ted and the group of artists who have joined them to build on this vision.
A reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the Verde Art Gallery of Yavapai College. The event is free and open to the public. Complimentary small bites and wine available for purchase from the Southwest Wine Center.
